The Digital Garden on Leetsdale has now proven that wood chips work just as well as hay in a sheet mulch. A healthy soil can eat 12 inches of hay in a year requiring annual renewal. Wood chips last at least two years (we will see how much longer). Imagine how long a sheet mulch built with logs could last.
In the hugelkultur literature they talk about 30 years of fertility with no additional work. That is a lot of vegetables and carbon sequestered by an afternoon's labor.
