Bee Research Demonstrates Pesticide Residue Effects

From the National Sustainable Agriculture information Service:

Research by graduate student Judy Wu, published in the online journal PLoS One, demonstrates the sub-lethal effects of pesticide residue exposure on honey bees, which play a critical role in the production of one third of the food that humans consume. Wu found that low levels of pesticides build up in honey bee brood comb wax and cause serious consequences for developing worker bees and the adult worker bee lifespan. The pesticides involved in Wu's study include those used by beekeepers, growers and homeowners. They include miticides, insecticides, fungicides and herbicides. In addition, according to Wu's study, longer development time for bees may provide a reproductive advantage for Varroa destructor mites.

For many of us finding local, healthy, and sustainable food is vitally important.  But what about our trusted best friends?  Shouldn't our dogs and cats receive the same benefits.  That is why I am in the process of starting a local, free range, and organic raw pet food line.  I am trying to get as much market info as possible so if you would be interested in buying the product or have any suggestions on developing the business please let me know.

The 2010 Biennial of the Americas is an international event celebrating the culture, ideas and people of the Western Hemisphere, hosted by the City of Denver.
Throughout the month of July, Denver will welcome national and international visitors for a cross-cultural experience bridging and unifying the artistic, intellectual and political progress of the hemisphere's 35 nations.

Transition Denver’s Transition Tuesdays Continue!
We are thrilled to host Scott Brown and
“Restorative Activism: Lessons in Compassion and Social Change”

Tuesday, May 11 Mercury Café 22nd and California 7:00-9:00 pm

Restorative activism is an integrated approach to being and working in the world, integrating body, mind, psyche/soul, spirit and action.

It offers theory and practices which cultivate self-awareness and self-compassion, setting the stage for life-long practice in becoming ever more conscious, the essence of being an adult. This, the wise ones have long told us, is where peace has to start. Compassion for others is a by-product of the work we do with ourselves. Intention helps, it’s maybe even vital, but if we haven’t made peace with ourselves, all aspects of ourselves, unconditionally, we will not show up peacefully in the world.

Scott Brown is co-founder of Open Path and Restorative Divorce. He is trained in peacemaking, restorative justice, and the Hakomi method of psychotherapy. Currently finishing a master’s degree program at Naropa University in Transpersonal Psychology and Ecopsychology, Scott worked as an environmental campaigner for 15 years with Greenpeace, the Idaho Conservation League, and the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society. He brings a passion for Transition and was an organic farmer for 6 years near the upper reaches of the Bay of Fundy in Nova Scotia.

You are invited to Transition Denver’s March 30th Potluck and Platform Planning Party!

Green Spaces
1368 26th St (between Walnut and Larimer)
Tuesday, March 30th
6-9pm

We at Transition Denver are always considering ways we can be helpful to further the cause of creating a vibrant and resilient Denver.

To that end, we are planning to put together a “platform” of policy recommendations that we would make public and take to City Council members.

We need your help in this process.
We will enjoy networking and eating from 6 – 7ish and then we will do a bit of brainstorming around the following question-

“If you were sitting with a Denver City Council member and could give your top 3-5 wishes for policy recommendations for the city, what would they be?”

Please come prepared to share your ideas. We want the community’s input in creating this platform.

Bring something yummy to eat and/or drink. Transition Denver potlucks are Zero Waste.
Please bring your own plate, silverware, etc.

See you at GreenSpaces on the 30th!!
