Where would you like to do a study group on assessing and surviving collapse threats, as well as thriving despite them?

Comment by Becky Elder on May 23, 2012 at 6:31am Hey there, Margaret. Come to as many as you can! Just a note on the potluck. Laura and Tim Spears have an internationally known food and native gardens on the east side of Black Forest. 10 acres of beautiful plants, structures, views and more! Laura is a seed starting queen and has a greenhouse devoted to just that! It is a wonderful place to be!
Comment by Margaret Beers Oliver on May 22, 2012 at 8:44pm Announcing the opening of the
Manitou Springs Seed Library
located at the Manitou Springs Library, 701 Manitou Avenue, Manitou Springs, Co 80829
The purpose of our project is twofold. We want to promote the development and preservation of landrace heirloom seeds and varieties that are well adapted to the arid growing conditions and short growing season that are typical of Colorado’s Front Range and in conjunction, promote the development of an equally well adapted body of local knowledge on how to save and pass on those seeds to future growers.
Seed libraries work by creating a relationship with regional growers. The seed library offers free seeds and a means of regional seed exchange while teaching people how to save those seeds successfully. In return, growers commit to bringing back a portion of the seed produced by those plants at the end of the growing season. The returned seed enters the library catalog and becomes available to more growers the following season, who will in turn, borrow and return even more.
Those of us who have started this effort are gardeners and growers like you. Bookmark the site and introduce yourself because more information is added regularly and we’d love to get to know our fellow Front Range gardeners and enthusiasts.
World Environment Day to focus on "Green Economy"
Celebrated Locally on Saturday June 2
The J&P (Justice & Peace Commission) invites the community to celebrate World Environment Day on June 2 with a "Local Economy Fair" at First United Methodist Church, 420 N. Nevada Ave. The worldwide theme for the U.N.-designated day is "Green Economy: Does It Include You?" Our answer is a Green Economy = Local Economy! The fair will feature exhibits from 3-5:30 p.m. on local food, local directories, barter and time bank systems, Repeat Boutique (swap-shopping event running from 1-7 p.m.), local currencies, Slow Money, ridesharing, crowdsourcing and other tools to keep our resources in the region.
Mixer with food, drinks and speaker Dave Gardner ("Growthbusters") to commence at 5:30 p.m. Suggested $5 donation at the door.
Want to get involved? If you are part of a nonprofit group promoting some aspect of re-localizing the economy, be a part of our free exhibits. If you are a business that has a local product to offer, sponsor tables run $100. If you are a caterer and would like to help provide food for the mixer, we'll compensate you with credits ("Locos") in our Justice Exchange Network. If you'd like to volunteer to help with organizing the fair, let us know. For more information, contact Steve at sustain@ppjpc.org.
