Bee Research Demonstrates Pesticide Residue Effects

From the National Sustainable Agriculture information Service:

Research by graduate student Judy Wu, published in the online journal PLoS One, demonstrates the sub-lethal effects of pesticide residue exposure on honey bees, which play a critical role in the production of one third of the food that humans consume. Wu found that low levels of pesticides build up in honey bee brood comb wax and cause serious consequences for developing worker bees and the adult worker bee lifespan. The pesticides involved in Wu's study include those used by beekeepers, growers and homeowners. They include miticides, insecticides, fungicides and herbicides. In addition, according to Wu's study, longer development time for bees may provide a reproductive advantage for Varroa destructor mites.

For many of us finding local, healthy, and sustainable food is vitally important.  But what about our trusted best friends?  Shouldn't our dogs and cats receive the same benefits.  That is why I am in the process of starting a local, free range, and organic raw pet food line.  I am trying to get as much market info as possible so if you would be interested in buying the product or have any suggestions on developing the business please let me know.

Peak Moment Conversations - A television program that showcases perspectives and initiatives for local self-reliant living.

The half-hour programs feature host Janaia Donaldson's conversations and on-site tours with individuals and communities preparing for accelerating economic, energy and climate challenges.

This program will be presented weekly, Mondays, 6:30PM on Denver Open Media (DOM) channel 56 on Denver Comcast Cable starting Oct 25th.

reduce CO2 emissions via climate action Work Parties organized in
cooperation with 350.org, an international campaign that's building
a movement to unite the world around solutions to the climate crisis. The
mission is to inspire the world to rise to the challenge of the climate crisis –
to create a new sense of urgency and of possibility for our planet.
The symposium will be held in the EventGallery 910Arts, which opens up
to an open-air courtyard. In an afternoon session, we will be visioning
an edible living wall project for the 910Arts courtyard promoting artistic design,
found objects, and local food.

and learn all about the exciting events that the Biennial will bring to Denver.

The 2010 Biennial of the Americas is an international event celebrating the culture, ideas and people of the Western Hemisphere, hosted by the City of Denver.
Throughout the month of July, Denver will welcome national and international visitors for a cross-cultural experience bridging and unifying the artistic, intellectual and political progress of the hemisphere's 35 nations.

The Biennial of the Americas has successfully secured cultural partners, each of whom will offer unique and spectacular programs throughout the month of July. One of these partners is an art center in Riverfront Park called PlatteForum. Through the creative process, PlatteForum gives hope and direction to underserved youth who collaborate with master artists from around the world. This experience transforms the lives of the youth, the artists and the community.

The Biennial partner PlatteForum/Lighthouse Writers Workshop has selected the artists for the 2010 Biennial Residency: an artists and writers collective. This unique residency is in partnership with the Biennial of the Americas. Resident artists will create new work in response to the Biennial themes of Innovation, Sustainability, the Arts, and Community. The work will culminate in exhibitions at PlatteForum and throughout the Riverfront Park Retail Plaza, opening August 5, 2010.

Judy Anderson, Artistic Director/Founder of PlatteForum, is an arts administrator, artist, and educator with more than 30 years of experience in the arts field. She is currently the Artistic Director/Founder of PlatteForum and owner of Judy Anderson Studio. Before moving to Denver in 2002, she was Professor and Chair of the Division of Design, School of Art at the University of Washington, past President of the University and College Designers Association (UCDA), and member of the boards of GDEA (Graphic Design Education Association) and AIGA (American Institute of Graphic Artists) Seattle. Ms. Anderson has taught at universities in Colorado, California, and Washington. Ms. Anderson’s work has been exhibited in major galleries and museums in the country, has toured in exhibitions in Japan, England, United States, Europe and the Soviet Union, and is in the permanent collection at the Getty Museum, Walker Art Center, New York Public Library, and the Universities of Utah, Delaware, and Washington.
Jacqueline Fogg is a former teacher and trainer in the Montessori method of early childhood education. She has written and produced over 155 television programs, film scripts, and children's books. She was nominated for 'Best Original Script' in South Africa for her writing and production of 'A Day At The Races' in South Africa during the early days of new democracy. She was nominated for Best Original Program for 'Henrietta's House,' which she wrote and produced. Jacqueline was invited to the United Nations for her work and was present at Nelson Mandela's inauguration reception. She sat on the umbrella body for Montessori in Southern Africa as a way to educate the previously disenfranchised population. She has trained and taught hundreds of workshops in the townships in the teach the teacher program, which she initiated. Jacqueline currently assists the U.S. embassies in numerous African countries to engage with the local economies and governments of the region.She has been actively involved in women’s and childrens’ rights in developing nations and has travelled extensively in the Middle East and Iraq. She also sat on the American Chamber of Commerce committees of HIV/AIDS and Black Economic Empowerment for the Southern African Developing countries. Jacqueline assists in training at the U.S. Dept of State with the Family Liaison office for participants from over 25 different countries. Jacqueline recently produced a created an on-line course entitled ‘Understanding Islam’ with Ambassador Akbar Ahmed (Pres Bush’s advisor on Islam).
