Profile Information

How are you currently involved in the Transition movement?
I'm just getting started. I was introduced to it in NZ while I was nannying for a family who helped start a Transition Initiative in Kaitaia, Northland. While I was there I read Bob Hopkins' book and also ended up cooking for a Northland Transition Initiative Leadership training weekend. Now that I'm back home I'm hoping to become involved. I'm already active in many ways on a personal/family level.
In what ways do you identify with the Transition movement? Why are you interested?
Oh so many ways. Lets see...I am generally enthused by the optimistic approach that the Transition movement takes in contrast with many other environmental groups. I think it takes a serious and overwhelming issue and breaks it down into manageable obstacles. I was probably most drawn in by food and waste management issues. I feel personally invested in the idea of a future that is re-localized, sustainable, slower paced, healthier, and happier. I love the concept of "the great re-skilling." I actually feel as though reading Rob Hopkins' book gave me more purpose in life and excitement about the future.
What background and skills do you bring to this community?
I was born and raised in Boulder and love it here. I'm an artist, I speak Spanish, I'm good at cooking and I like to do things myself. In NZ I learned a fair amount about composting. I learned some things about gardening and preserving food as well and I'm working on learning more. I'm organized and reliable...
How can you help the growth/acceptance/vitality of the Transition movement?
*Tell my friends/anyone who will listen about the movement
*Change/adapt personal habits: shop and eat locally, work on minimizing consumption, start growing food, use more earth-friendly art methods, sew more, educate myself further...
*I could actually use some help here. I'm hoping there will be a concrete way in which I can help out (i.e. helping with a specific project, talking to classrooms, doing "green" art projects with kids...stuff like that)
Your Favorite Books/Websites/Blogs/RSS Feeds for Information about the Transition Movement
Well, I read Rob Hopkins' book, which is great.
This is the group's website whose training I went to in NZ: http://whangareitt.ning.com/
I honestly haven't followed much on the internet...I'll work on that
