Common Knowledge

Communities depend on a common base of knowledge and values to maintain cohesion. To use just two examples of why: common knowledge enables its members to communicate, and common values keep them from killing each other. This is true regardless of the…

Overpopulation in Colorado and America: the last taboo

Re: “Packing in the population” by Joey Bunch, Denver Post, 12/22/10

The recent U.S. Census figures show the United States continuing at breakneck speed to add another 100 million people by 2035 and 138 million by 2050.  In the face of growing water shortages, energy crises,

environmental degradation, overloaded cities and resource depletion—such papers as the Denver Post featured a front page extravaganza announcing,…

Because I find that I have been neglecting my blog in here!

Hoping to start a monthly pot luck with people who are interested in transition, yard sharing, and other sustainable interests.

This is just a starting point but had to begin somewhere.

The mandarin orange trees are doing well, the indoor garden is not dying and some is doing really well... LIfe is good!

The Food Police are going after folks like us

Friends,

More people need to be aware of the situation we are facing. A Minnesota family has had their lives turned upside because the mom was attempting to help a farmer provide real food to her neighbors.

Christianity vs. "The World"

It has now been more than a decade since I gave up my identity as a

Christian. Over that time, the number of Christmas cards I receive

has dropped exponentially as friends and family learned about my

current views on the subject of the existence of a deity and

apparently became uncomfortable with them.…

Invitation to New Zealand

I would like to invite you to attend a conference in New Zealand.  The title of the conference is Signs of Change. Of course I don't mean for you to travel to New Zealand.  In fact, the conference was a new experiment in getting together without travel.  The 40+ speakers presented their own work from all walks of life that is along a new path of emerging sustainability.  We have filmed and produced the presentations on you tube so you can "attend" the conference and find out what is… Continue

Trepidation 2010

As the end of 2010 approaches, I have more trepidation than I can remember.  A large part of this comes from growing evidence that projections of an impending population crash are likely to be accurate.  Critical…

Transition Golden - First thoughts

Welcome To Transition Golden!

We, in Golden, are very fortunate to live in a setting as lovely as it is.

We have beautiful mountains which invite our exploration and exercise.

We have a lovely historic city. We have a precious river (Clear Creek)

which provides pure water. We have seasons - all kinds - but none too severe.

We are also blessed with over 300 "Fine" days as the English would say ... or sunny…

Getting Unstuck

A growing number of us are stuck trying to maintain what we have while laying the groundwork for a new lifestyle that is more sustainable. Maintaining what we have typically involves supporting an economy that has become dependent on perpetual and inherently unhealthy growth. The lifestyle we seek would allow us to thrive without such an economy. Given this dichotomy, it’s no wonder we’re stuck.

Perpetual growth demands…

Dual flush conversion kit review

In our efforts to reduce our water consumption, we have been looking at replacing our old 1.6 gallon flush toilet with a dual flush model, but both the financial and environmental costs have been a blocking issue. On a recent trip to Home Depot to get some materials for our new herb bed, I noticed a dual flush retro-fit kit from Hydro-right and after reading about it, I decided to give it a try.

My toilet is a Mansfield brand, which is an oddity in how the seal and ballcock…
